For dealers
- The buyer pays vehicle licence duty when the vehicle licence is granted or transferred into their name at the Department of Transport.
- For a new vehicle the dutiable value is the WA retail selling price set by the manufacturer, importer or distributor, including options and accessories. For a used vehicle it is the amount it could reasonably sell for on the open market.
- Duty is not payable when a dealer licenses a vehicle solely to sell or resell it in the ordinary course of business, or to demonstrate it to buyers. Service demonstrators (new vehicles lent to service customers) were added from 28 May 2022. A dealer certificate must be provided at licensing.
- Exempt vehicles must not be used for anything else while the dealer holds the licence, apart from minor incidental use. If a vehicle moves to a non-exempt use, the dealer must tell RevenueWA within one month and duty is assessed on its value at that time.
- A new demonstrator must have been used for more than two months before it can be treated as used for duty. A display car that was never driven is still valued at the recommended retail price. Dealers must keep records for each exempt vehicle.
In carassessments.com.au the deal builder adds duty to the on-road costs, and the rego transfer form comes pre-filled. See the deal desk.

Questions dealers ask
How much is stamp duty on a $30,000 car in WA?
$1,050. At $30,000 the sliding rate is 2.75 + (5,000 / 6,666.66) = 3.50%, and 3.50% of $30,000 is $1,050.
Why does WA duty jump so quickly between $25,000 and $50,000?
The rate itself rises with the value. It starts at 2.75% at $25,000 and climbs by about 0.15 percentage points for every $1,000 until it reaches 6.5% at $50,000, then stays at 6.5%.
Is the rate applied to the whole value or just the part above $25,000?
The whole value. The sliding rate is worked out first and then applied to the full dutiable value.
Do dealers pay duty on stock and demonstrators in WA?
No, as long as the vehicle is licensed solely to sell, resell or demonstrate it (or as a service demonstrator) and a dealer certificate is lodged. Duty is payable if it is put to another use.
What about trucks over 4.5 tonnes?
Heavy vehicles pay a flat 3% of the dutiable value, capped at $12,000.
