For dealers
- The buyer pays stamp duty when the vehicle is registered or transferred. A transfer must be done within 14 days of buying the vehicle.
- Duty is charged on the purchase price or the market value, whichever is higher.
- Utes, panel vans, vans and heavy vehicles are commercial vehicles (built solely or mainly to carry goods) and pay $3 per $100 above $2,000. Everything else, including four-wheel drives, is non-commercial.
- Dealers holding an unrestricted second-hand vehicle dealer licence can claim an exemption on new and used vehicles registered for resale, and on new demonstrators and service demonstrators. A restricted licence only covers motorcycles.
- The dealer exemption lasts 12 months at most (including unregistered periods). Under Information Circular 108, occasional staff use is accepted up to 12,000 km. Courtesy cars, loan cars, parts runs and private use by staff or directors are not eligible. Keep records of each vehicle and lodge a voluntary disclosure if one stops qualifying.
In carassessments.com.au the deal builder adds duty to the on-road costs, and the rego transfer form comes pre-filled. See the deal desk.

Questions dealers ask
How much is stamp duty on a $30,000 car in SA?
$1,140 for a non-commercial car: $60 for the first $3,000, plus $4 for each of the 270 lots of $100 above that. A commercial vehicle such as a ute at the same price pays $870.
Is a dual cab ute commercial or non-commercial in SA?
It depends on what it was built for. RevenueSA treats a vehicle built solely or mainly to carry goods (utes, panel vans, vans) as commercial. Check the vehicle classification on the registration if unsure.
Is there a luxury rate in South Australia?
No. Above $3,000 a non-commercial vehicle pays $4 per $100 at any value, so there is no extra step for expensive cars.
Do dealers pay duty on stock in SA?
Not if they hold an unrestricted second-hand vehicle dealer licence and the vehicle is registered for resale or used as a new demonstrator. The exemption lasts 12 months at most.
