For dealers

  • The buyer pays duty when the vehicle is registered or transferred into their name through Service NSW. Dealers usually include it in the drive-away price and pay it with the registration.
  • For a new vehicle, duty is based on the price paid including GST, options and dealer delivery. For a used vehicle it is the sale price or market value, whichever is higher.
  • Licensed motor dealers can be exempt from motor vehicle duty on second-hand vehicles held for sale and on new demonstration vehicles. If a demonstrator was registered with duty paid, a refund can be claimed once an exemption authority has been issued.
  • There is no EV exemption any more. The exemption and $3,000 rebate stopped for vehicles from 1 January 2024, except where the contract or deposit was made before that date.
  • Refunds generally have to be requested within 5 years, with the original certificate of registration showing duty was paid.

How is duty worked out on a car over $45,000 in NSW?

It is $1,350 plus $5 for every $100 or part over $45,000. A $50,000 passenger car pays $1,350 plus $250, which is $1,600.
