For dealers
- The buyer pays duty when the vehicle is registered or the registration is transferred.
- For a new vehicle the dutiable value includes trade-ins, accessories fitted before the sale, dealer delivery, GST and luxury car tax.
- Dealers can register vehicles without paying duty if they hold an exemption certificate or a motor vehicle trader licence (quoting the licence number is enough). The exemption only covers vehicles bought as trading stock or used as demonstrators.
- The exemption lapses if a demonstrator is put to another use, or if the vehicle is not sold within 12 months of registration, unless the Commissioner allows longer. Before the 12 months is up you can apply for a determination that a genuine attempt to sell has been made.
- The EV duty exemption has ended. It covered new and used electric and hydrogen vehicles registered from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2023, then only new EVs contracted before 25 May 2023 and registered by 31 December 2023.
In carassessments.com.au the deal builder adds duty to the on-road costs, and the rego transfer form comes pre-filled. See the deal desk.

Questions dealers ask
How much is stamp duty on a $30,000 car in Tasmania?
$900. Passenger vehicles from $600 to $35,000 pay $3 per $100 or part of $100.
Why is the rate $11 per $100 between $35,000 and $40,000?
It is a step band. It moves the duty from 3% of the value at $35,000 ($1,050) to 4% at $40,000 ($1,600), so there is no sudden jump at the $40,000 mark.
Are electric cars exempt from duty in Tasmania?
Not any more. The exemption covered registrations from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2023, plus some new EVs contracted before 25 May 2023 and registered by 31 December 2023.
Do utes and vans pay the higher passenger rates?
No. Commercial vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes pay $3 per $100 or part at any value over $600.
Do dealers pay duty on stock in Tasmania?
Not on trading stock or demonstrators, if the dealer holds an exemption certificate or a motor vehicle trader licence. The exemption ends if the vehicle is used for something else or is not sold within 12 months.
