For dealers

  • The buyer pays stamp duty when the vehicle is registered or transferred at the Motor Vehicle Registry.
  • The dutiable value is usually the sale price, including accessories added to the vehicle, the trade-in allowance and dealer delivery charges. Market value is used in some cases, such as non-arm's length sales.
  • Motor traders claim the stamp duty exemption on the registration form (Form R11) for vehicles bought for resale in the ordinary course of business that are not for the sole or principal use of the trader.
  • The EV concession applies automatically at registration or transfer. The registration must show an electric primary power source (battery electric or plug-in hybrid). It runs until 30 June 2027, so check before quoting a car that will register after that date.

In carassessments.com.au the deal builder adds duty to the on-road costs, and the rego transfer form comes pre-filled. See the deal desk.
