For dealers
- The buyer pays duty when the vehicle is registered or transferred into their name through Access Canberra.
- For a new car, look up its combined CO2 figure in the Green Vehicle Guide before quoting on-road costs. The difference between category A and category D on a $40,000 car is $676.
- Zero emission vehicles are no longer duty free. From 1 September 2025 the nil rate for AAA vehicles (and new AA and A hybrids) was replaced with $2.50 per $100 under $45,000.
- The 2026-27 ACT Budget sets new rates for categories B, C, D and non-rated vehicles from 1 February 2027, and used vehicles other than zero emission vehicles are also affected. For example, new category B moves to $3.25 per $100 under $45,000, $1,462.50 plus $5.59 per $100 over $45,000, and $3,419.00 plus $8.00 per $100 over $80,000. Check the ACT Revenue Office page for deals that will register after 31 January 2027.
- Dealer exemptions for trading stock and demonstrators are not covered by this calculator. Check with the ACT Revenue Office before registering stock in the dealership name.
In carassessments.com.au the deal builder adds duty to the on-road costs, and the rego transfer form comes pre-filled. See the deal desk.

Questions dealers ask
How much is stamp duty on a $30,000 car in the ACT?
For a new car rated C (176 to 220 g/km) or a used petrol or diesel car it is $951 ($3.17 per $100). A new category A car (66 to 130 g/km) pays $852 and a zero emission vehicle pays $750.
Are electric vehicles still exempt in the ACT?
No. From 1 September 2025 zero emission vehicles pay $2.50 per $100 under $45,000, with higher rates above that. Before then they were exempt.
Why does a used car pay the C rate?
The emissions categories only apply to new vehicles. Used vehicles are charged at the category C rate, except zero emission vehicles, which keep the AAA rate.
Where do I find a car's CO2 figure?
In the Australian Government Green Vehicle Guide or on the fuel label on a new car's windscreen. Use the combined tailpipe CO2 figure in grams per kilometre.
Are ACT rates changing?
Yes. New rates for categories B, C, D and non-rated vehicles apply from 1 February 2027, and used vehicles other than zero emission vehicles are also affected. Zero emission (AAA) vehicles are not changing. The rates in this calculator apply to registrations from 1 September 2025 to 31 January 2027.
